Pet Identification
Permanent forms of identification are available to help find your pet should he/she become lost. Permanent identification can be achieved through a microchip (dogs and cats) or tattooing (dogs). In Pennsylvania, after your pet is microchipped or tattooed, you can apply for a lifetime (instead of yearly) dog license.
Microchips, so small they fit through a hypodermic needle, are proven safe and effective. Just like a vaccination, it is injected under the skin of your pet where it remains for life. We can microchip your pet during an office exam, as an outpatient procedure with a technician, or while your pet stays with us for a medical or surgical procedure. Ask us for an AvidĀ® microchip brochure.
Tattooing the upper inner right thigh is another way of permanently identifying your pet. An official number is assigned to Fluffy by the county courthouse, and we tattoo this number while your pet is under sedation. When the procedure is finished we reverse the sedative and Fluffy goes home.
